St. Jude Medical, Inc. manufactures mechanical heart valves and annuloplasty rings. It sells and distributes these products to hospitals around the world.

In 1997, St. Jude Medical began to coat the sewing rings of its mechanical heat valves and annuloplasty rings with a silver-based coating known as "Silzone." The sewing rings were meant to reduce the risk of bacterial infection. By January 21, 2000, more than 36,000 Silzone coated heart valves had been sold and implanted in patients worldwide.

January 21, 2000—St. Jude Medical announced a worldwide recall of its mechanical heat valves and annuloplasty rings coated with Silzone. Some countries had already issued safety warnings for Silzone products, or refused permission for hospitals and surgeons to use these products. Additionally, some hospitals had stopped implanting these devices amid their own concerns about patients safety.

During a study assessing the effectiveness of Silzone-coated heart valves, researchers found an increase in the incidence of paravalvular leak (PVL). The recall covered only inventories of Silzone devices, and not devices already implanted in patients.
